Keeping kosher on Costa Cruises

Cruise Line: Costa Cruises Kosher Caterer: N/A Meals offered: For those of you who are not familiar with Costa Cruises, it is a much smaller cruise line, from a North American perspective. The Italian company does have some cruises in North America, but they are much more limited than other major cruise lines. Costa is a subsidiary of Carnival, much like Holland America and Princess. However, unlike those other subsidiaries, my conversations with Costa has lead me to learn that they offer no kosher food. Although they stated there probably are kosher breads and cereal on board, they make no guarantees. Anyone wishing to have kosher food on Costa can contact guest relations and make arranges for bringing their own food on board. All food must be cooked and individually wrapped, and they will store and warm for you. Based on this, unless there is a specific itinerary you feel very strongly you want to take, the chances are, Costa is not the cruise line for you. ...

Eat kosher food on your cruise's port days

I have covered in two separate posts food on the boat ( breakfast and lunch/dinner) . What happens when you are at port? Almost no ports have kosher food options. Ports with kosher options Although some cruises stop in places like Los Angeles, New York City or Boston, most do not. Obviously if you stop in one of those cities, you will have no trouble finding kosher food. Outside of main US cities, most ports kosher food is harder to come by. Even in the stores, you won’t find stuff with a hechsher like you will in the US. If your cruise stops in Nassau, you are in luck if you plan to do an excursion at Atlantis. There do have one restaurant that has packaged kosher meals, which are surprisingly delicious, but pricey. They also only keep a few in stock, so I suggest calling in advance, so they know to have enough on hand! Staying on the boat Although you may want to get off the boat and explore, if you don’t have a big excursion planned you can just eat back on the boa...

Keeping kosher on Norwegian Cruise Line

I hope to do a whole series of these type posts, where in each post I will highlight one cruise line and their kosher offerings. I have chosen Norwegian to be the first as they recently revamped their entire kosher menu, and now easily has the best out of any of the major lines. Cruise Line: Norwegian Cruise Line Kosher Caterer: Borenstein Caterers under the OU (note this is a recent change and there may still be some food on the ship from Sterling Caterers, under the OK) Meals offered: All meals come double wrapped and frozen. Kosher meals can only be ordered in the main dining room, and not in the buffet or via room service. NCL recently completely revamped their kosher meal offerings, so I cannot speak from first-hand experience on this new program. I called NCL and spoke with them about it, and I have summarized my conversation here. Rather than using only plastic utensils and paper plates, this new program can come with real plates and utensils for you to u...

Eating kosher Lunch/Dinner on a cruise

The number one thing people seem to do on a cruise is eat (well and maybe drink). When cruising kosher its no different than any other form of travel, you can’t eat what everyone else is. Unlike some other places however, cruises cater really well to kosher food. Basic lunch/dinner food Just like on an airplane the main option for food is a frozen meal that they warm for you. All the food comes double wrapped and heated, typically in the oven. There are typically about 6 meat options, 1-2 pareve options, and about 3 dairy options. I will go into more detail on these in a future post, and go more into detail by cruise line, but I do not want to have this post get too long. One tip that they might not tell you, there is no limit on how many they let you order. Feel free to order 2 or 3 meals on the first night so you can try a variety and learn how filling they are, and then adjust from there. If you and your spouse each order 3 meals, you should be able to try the entire mea...
