Drinking coffee while on a cruise


Coffee is a very important aspect of every adult’s morning, whether they are Jewish or not. Fortunately, there is plenty of coffee on board a cruise, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Basic coffee
If you are only interested in a basic cup of coffee, you are in luck. Basic coffee is free on all major cruise lines, and on some there is free coffee available 24/7. Its pretty universally accepted that all plain coffee is kosher, so feel free to drink as much coffee as you want on a cruise.

They do have paper coffee cups on a cruise which is very nice, but only by request. The standard are ceramic coffee mugs, which are an issue to use. If you do the sit down breakfast, they will provide you with the paper ones by default with your kosher food, but I have waited upwards of 20+ minutes for someone to find them at other times.

In order to avoid this needless wait, I suggest bringing a spill proof, travel coffee mug, with you. You can grab your coffee and take it on the go, which even the non-kosher consumers cannot do with the provided coffee cups. I highly recommend something like this Thermos tumbler which does an amazing job of keeping your coffee hot, even 8 hours later.

Coffee drinks
Every cruise and cruise line will obviously offer something different, but this is an over view of what to look for.

Most cruise ships have a coffee house that will make specialty drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. The prices of these are actually usually fairly good. If you have the unlimited alcohol package, they often include these drinks so it won’t cost you extra, but check your lines specific drink package policy to be sure.

If you are afraid of missing Starbucks too much when taking a cruise, you may want to look at Royal Caribbean as your cruise line of choice. On their Oasis class of ships, the coffee shop is an actual Starbucks, and prices are similar to those you find on dry land. You can even use your Starbucks app and use stars for free drinks.

Other Royal Caribbean ships offer a coffee card you can buy for discounted coffee by pre-paying for 15 drinks. Make sure you read the fine print before buying this card however. Often times larger sizes count as 2 drinks. Adding an extra shot of espresso to your drink may be 2 drinks as well.

Keeping kosher on Celebrity Cruises

Continuing in my series of posts focusing on  kosher food by cruise line , this time I am focusing on Celebrity Cruises. The representative I spoke with was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The variety of products they offer were extensive, and included breakfast as well.
